My work How Do You Escape? is a web tour experience built with Javascript WEBGL feature and 3D modeling. The experience started with a lotus trapped in an ancient Chinese drawing of a family gathering in garden. While viewers move around in the web-page, fences and bars appear that enclose everything in the scene. The answer to the problem in the work, in other words, the way out is simple and ironic. When the rule is having problem, the only way to fix it is not obeying the rule.
Art is not about always outputting, it is also about in-taking. Therefore I see myself as a reader who is looking for allies through books and articles. I took inspiration from the book Dream of the Red Chamber, which portrays the decline of a prestigious family during the Qing dynasty. The book was stated by many scholars, as showing resistance to feudal authority.
Although contemporary political systems have formally moved beyond feudalism, they are now defined by different terminologies. Yet the underlying patterns of suppression and institutional structures persist. These dynamics continue particularly through the mechanism of patriarchy and the abuse of power. I therefore, seek to raise awareness of the institutional whitewashing behind those abuses through this work.
