Being an artist means breaking reality, objectivity, and the authority of physical law. The multimedia work I Am Not Convinced started with a snowman in the first snow in 2025. Coming from a warm southern city in China, touching chunks of snow is such a blessing because of the contingent upon both the geography and the weather. I made a snowman in the gesture of defiance against the blazing sun that arrived the next day. In this work, the blazing sun represents the suppression that seems soft but melts the urge to speak up. For emphasizing the visualization of “being trapped,” I used a spherical hologram to be projected onto with a glowing model representing the light of sanity. Debate is always an essential part in the art world, my debate in this piece associates with the theory The Brain in A Vat (BIV) by Hilary Putman, it proposes a hypothesis against freewill that our cognition might just be brains put in a vat with information supplied by tubes. No matter how real this hypothesis is, nowadays we are trapped in the bubble that was chosen by underlying power, with selected “truth” and history feed to us. If I were indeed only a brain, I would refuse to take anything for granted.
